My Journey to Triathlon, by Tenchi So

I served in the Canadian Forces as an Infantry Officer for 9 years.  I joined the Army out of high school through the Canadian Army Reserves and my first unit was with the Toronto Scottish Regiment, and yes… I got to wear a kilt for the first time!

Martial Artist have been a lifelong passion of mine, having studied Boxing, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Military Combat, and Muay Thai.   I focused all my athletic career on fast-twitch, anaerobic and explosive sports, and didn’t have much exposure or experience with aerobic sports prior to switching to Triathlons back in May of 2014.

I was looking for the ultimate challenge, and to be in a sport that was going to take me out of my comfort zone. Triathlons, represented that challenge for me.   I was an adult onset swimmer, hadn’t biked since childhood, and had only limited exposure to running through high school.

As a Fast-Twitch anaerobic athlete, I knew I needed to work on my aerobic fitness and decided to go for it.  After some self-training, patience and persistence, I dove right in and finished my first race at IRONMAN 70.3 Muskoka 4 months since I first started Triathlons.  I had the urge to keep in pursuit and finished my first 140.6 distance at Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Texas before my first-year anniversary into the sport.  To date, I have raced 30 x 70.3s and 12 x 140.6s from May 2014 to November of 2019.

There were some early challenges with triathlon I faced.  I found there was a lack in diversity and didn’t have much access to mentors and guidance when I first started.  Through the years I’ve learned a lot from the sport.  I’ve had the chance to race, meet, and connect with various Triathletes around the world.  I’ve made meaningful relationships through clubs, groups, and Social Media channels.  I’ve raced in Canada, the US, Denmark, Belgium, Mallorca (Spain), Austria, Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Sweden, Germany, France, Mexico, Serbia, and the Netherlands.

My journey of triathlon has been bright and everlasting.  Either slow twitch or fast twitch, muscles move and passion drives you.  For the future you never know.  One day I may be meeting you in one of those start corrals.
