It has been 100 years since the Tulsa “Black Wall Street” Massacre, in which white rioters in Oklahoma burned down Black businesses and killed as many as 300 people after falsely accusing a Black man of assaulting a white girl. “Tulsa wasn’t an isolated event in this country, in terms of violence against Black people and Black businesses,” says Jacqueline Wiggins, a business planning attorney at Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual), the life insurance and financial services company. “However, Tulsa became a symbol of the struggles faced by Black business owners.”
